2016 Men's Soccer

Unread post by RhowdyRam02 »

Tomorrow at 7 men's soccer starts their season at PC. This is coach Gareth Elliot's (class of 02) fourth season. Last year we went 4-3-1 in A10 play and 10-8-2 overall, tied for fourth in the conference with Fordham, Duquesne, and UMass. We're picked to finish fourth in the conference with one out of 13 first place votes, behind VCU but ahead of Fordham and George Washington. The top 8 teams in the conference advance to Davidson for the championships.

Sophomore midfielder Dominik Richter and junior goalkeeper Nils Leifhelm made the preseason all-conference team. Richter was #68 in TopDrawSoccer's top 100 freshmen last year after leading the team with 6 goals. Leifhelm has been first team all-conference both freshman and sophomore year.

Not only is tonight the kickoff of the soccer season, it's the first ever game at PC's new soccer stadium.

Image

"Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium, the new state of the art facility for the men's and women's soccer and men's lacrosse teams, official opened during the spring of 2016. The stadium features seating for over 1,500 fans, chair back seats, a new press box and two luxury boxes for entertainment. In addition the stadium also has new locker rooms for home and visiting teams and a 13HD Daktronics video board."

I have nothing going on tonight, I might check this game out. Just not sure where on campus it is.

It was a packed house at the new field, I think over 2,000 people. It was also hot, all that concrete absorbs all the solar energy during the day, and the field is Field turf.
Wow, Attendance was: 2245

Can't think of a better way to break in a brand new PC soccer facility than with a URI Ram victory⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️

Nice way to start off the season.

The win breaks a five game losing streak for the Rams versus the Friars. URI is now 29-11-4 all-time against PC.

Field turf is the wrong way to go for soccer, URI keeping the grass should substantial help recruiting if more teams continue to go with field turf.

PC certainly has more creature comforts. Chair back seats where we have bleachers. A video board, luxury boxes and so on. Both facilities have lights, so that's a wash. Our big advantage is a grass main field where they have turf.

Great win for A10 soccer as St Louis won on the road 1-0 against #5 ranked Wake Forest. Certain to move SLU into the top 25. SLU was preseason pick to win the A10.

We play @ SLU October 12

The friars having artificial surface for their soccer field does not seem to have hurt their winning percentage over the past few years...

Win over PC at PC was a very good win.
Today PC gave nationally ranked #3 Clemson all they could handle at Clemson losing 2-1.

Artificial turf has nothing to do with winning or losing. Players would rather play on a natural grass field that is kept in great condition than on artificial turf.

there must be lots of different kinds of artificial turf. PC turf seemed rug like, but if you go to Moses Brown Football field, it looks like real grass.
Also, there were not concessions at PC new stadium from what I could see, you had to go to a Dunkin Donuts inside Snyieder Arena.

Junior goalkeeper Nils Leifhelm earned A10 Defensive Player of the Week accolades for his seven save performance. Midfielder Solvi Palsson won Rookie of the Week for scoring the first goal of the game.

By the way Nils Leifhelm was named the 45th best player in the country by Top Drawer Soccer, the top ranked A10 player.

Appears that scoring is the main issue. We've yet to score more than one goal in regulation time. Looking at the stats we've out shot our opponent in 4 out of the last 5 and have had more corner kicks in 3 out of the last 5 with the Albany game being equal in corners. It seems like we have some offense just can't put the ball in the net. Hopefully something clicks now that the a10 season is about to start.

URI soccer loses to LaSalle 2-1 on Saturday. Team is now 4-8-1 overall and 1-2 in the A-10. They have a record of 1-5 at home and have lost seven of their last eight games.

Put football where it belongs and give the program two more scholarships to put them closer to their opponents and maybe we would see a difference.
