URI Football 2015

Unread post by Rhody15 »

Team just had their first practice with full pads, anybody a little excited about the upcoming season? Hopefully we're more competitive with another year with the coaching staff.

The Harvard home game is one game I'm really looking forward to.

Definitely looking forward to seeing whether we can start trending in the right direction this year. I was irrationally pumped for the win in the last game of the season last year.

What a day that was. Football W in their last game, went to Mews for dinner, then back for the Nebraska W.

The team has a home game on the 14th of November. Maybe we can get another doubleheader next year.

I think there are 9 QB's on spring roster?
They should find one good one.

Looks like Peavey's position has changed to Safety on the spring roster (not an April Fools Day joke).

Still, at QB there's:

1. Lowrie
2. Capparell
3. Vazzano
4. Dolan
5. DeSilva
6. Mroz
7. McKoy

Wow,I thought 9 sounded high. 7 still is a lot. With the QB play last season,15 would not be enough.

If you believe in the football maxim that if you have 2 quarterbacks then you don't really have one, what does it mean when you have 7?

Nevermind the quarterback play once they actually get the ball, I'm not sure I've seen a team have as many problems with just snapping the ball as URI did last year. I've never even seen bad RIIL teams struggle as bad as we did.

Have to imagine Lowrie gets first crack, although it will be interesting to see if any of the new guys can beat him out. (Mroz?)

Peter-that close game against Syracuse was the worse thing that could have happened to them that year.
Play hard with nothing to show for it. Reinforced their mindset. Would have been better off getting beat 50-0.

At CAA media day yesterday we were picked to finish 11th out of 12 with only Elon worse in a repeat of last year's standings. Senior CB Myles Holmes was the only member of the team named to the preseason all conference team as a returner. CAA Football's preseason All-Conference Team and predicted order of finish were voted on by the league's head coaches and media relations directors.

Shameless self-promotion: In addition to Bill Koch, please make sure you follow The Independent's new sports editor, William Geoghegan, who did have the info out a day before The Journal. However, you should be following both! :) Geoghegan said Lowrie is going to a junior college:

It does make the timing of this Foxboro Reporter story kind of odd though: http://www.foxbororeporter.com/articles ... 306538.txt

Koch had speculated he left to go to a Juco. Interesting to see that Peavey has transitioned to the defensive backfield, meaning it will more then likely be either be Caparell or Mroz at QB.

He could be. I was just speculating, as Mroz is coming in as a Juco player and Caparell had major time last year. You don't typically see freshman start, although Vazzano is further along then a typical freshman after prepping and coming in mid-season for Spring practice.
I'm excited about the running back crop this year. Cooper showed great potential last year, and Clarke had a solid work load before getting hurt after the first game and having to red-shirt. Add in the experience of Jordan Sebestian as well.

Good feedback Bos.
QB and RB play have killed them.
No RB has had good total season since Ferrer in 2010.
McCombs and Cooper had spurts.

Good point about running backs, especially the fact that it has been years since we've had a big back. I'd love to know how many times on third and short or going for it on fourth down, we refused a running play and tried to throw a short pass. One of many problems facing Coach Fleming. I'll be there for Harvard!

I dont know if anyone has watched the videos from camp so far. But the players and coaches all say they are better than last year. 72 players stayed on campus to get in shape before camp. I dont expect much from them this year maybe 2-3 wins but they seem like they are coming together.

Good Afternoon URI!

Syracuse guy here, just wanted to stop by and see if anybody was headed up our way for the opener? Did any of you guys come up last time?

If you're looking for anywhere to go or things to see we have a gentleman by the name of TexanMark who has a great guide to the area.

Looking forward to our matchup!

Will has a look at the QB battle in today's Independent. When we went to press, a decision hadn't been officially made, but you could kind of read the tea leaves given the snaps they were getting in practice and their performance. IIRC, Mroz went 15-for-26 or so on his throws with no INTs, whereas Caparell threw a couple picks on his 15 or so throws.

URI has 5 turnovers in the first half. Disgraceful.

Let's get beaten by better talent. I can understand that. I cannot understand lack of fundamentals and disciplined ball security.
