The softball team is currently 1-27, and an even more damning 0-11 in conference. The Good Five Cent Cigar ran a story last week calling for Coach Layton's dismissal after the season. http://rhodycigar.com/2015/04/09/column ... ch-layton/. One interesting note from that story, it appears that Layton's extension was only guaranteed for this season, but if she makes the six team Atlantic 10 playoff this year she becomes guaranteed through the 2017 season. We have 11 conference games left with George Mason currently in sixth place with a 7-7 record, so we're 5.5 games back of the last playoff spot. It would seem that the magic number for Layton's dismissal sits at 5. We host George Mason for three games on April 18th and 19th.

Does anybody know why Thorr keeps this coach?

It's the one big stain on his resume.

Has to be for budgetary and avoiding liability reasons. Softball is also probably low visibility enough to not require an in-season coaching change.

True. Team averages 56 per game in attendance. At this point Thor is handling the situation correctly imho. Let the process play itself out.

I do not understand how this situation is being handled. Given the record alone, there would be deep doubts about the Coach's ability, but when you add in the personal stories and harassment, it goes beyond logic. The team is now 2-34 and is getting blown out in many games. In one five game span, they made produced 3 runs to their opponents' 54! This is an embarrassment to the school.

I think it comes down to do you really want to waste money paying two softball coaches? If they thought they could fire her for cause over the bullying thing then it would be a different story, I'd imagine. As an alum, my pride or embarrassment with the school would be related to about 3,000 things before the performance of the softball team factored in.

You get the feeling, that URI almost considers this program a "throw out".

No one cares. If they are going to keep it, at least try and hire someone competent when her contract runs out.

Why would they try to hire someone incompetent?

They already did.

That was probably an accident. I would be surprised to find out that the goal was to hire an incompetent person.

At the end of last season the conventional wisdom was that she wouldn't have her contract extended because of the record and the bullying scandal. Now I wonder if the bullying scandal somehow bought her the new contract and at least this season. I wonder if the thought was that if the school let her go right after the bullying report came out that it would make the people making the complaint more likely to sue the school and be successful in their suit or if the school felt the coach had an avenue to sue the school herself. By offering her a new contract that isn't guaranteed after this season unless she made the A10 playoffs it allowed them to let her go for only performance reasons. And now that the team is 0-16 in conference and can't get a spot in the conference playoffs they have the avenue to let her go.

Not a big surprise, though after last year I suppose you had to worry a little bit. One thing I've noticed about Thorr, once he makes up his mind that it's time for a change, that coach is gone right away. Every coach that I remember getting the axe got it within two days of their season ending.

Takes extra care to make that axe extra sharp…for a super-clean cut. WHOMMMMPPPPPPPPPP!

Just a point of interest, it was three weeks after the season ended before Inglese was let go.

On July 17, 2017 URi hired our new Head Coach for the 2016 Season
This was the record of our previous HC where 2015 hit bottom recordwise:
2009; 14-37 (3-17) Home Runs = 16
2010; 19-35 (8-12) Home Runs = 32
2011; 7-46 (2-19) Home Runs = 28
2012; 21-32-1 (5-14-1) Home Runs = 30
2013; 10-37 (3-18) Home Runs = 14
2014; 13-32-1 (6-11-1) Home Runs = 7
2015; 3-41 (1-21) Home Runs = 9
2016; 7-8 (0-0) Home Runs = 11

What a great start for our new HC and team this year. after losing their 1st 4 games they have won 7 of their last 11.
We already have 7 wins....more than double last year's total
We already have more home runs (11) than in each of the last two season totals (9 and 7 respectively)
Coach has moved Sophomore Kylie Shivery from 1st base where she made only one error last year to third base - a key defensive move. She is hitting .348 with 4 HRs and 19 RBIs already. Shivery was the first URI Players to get Conference Players of the Week since 2002 - 14 years ago!!!!
Becca Rogers is only a Freshman but she has been the starting pitcher in 11 of the 15 Games. She has a 5-3 record with a 3.27 ERA, 29 strikeouts in 45 innings pitched and only 18 walks.

So happy for this team!!!!

After pitcher and catcher, third base is the most important defensive position in fast-pitch softball....nice to see her make the transition.

URI has made good progress since the Coaching Change two years ago when the team only won one game.
Picked to finish 8th in A10 this season but I wouldn’t be surprised if they do better than that.

URI in history has only had 3 all rookie players and Coach Bridget Hurlman has already equaled that in her two years at the helm with 1 her first year and 2 last season.

Big Series coming up this weekend vs LaSalle for URI Women's Softball Team
URI is only 6-19 BUT they have won 4 of their last 5!!
Including my favorite, as always, beating PC 5-3. Sophomore 2nd Baseman Erica Robles his a 3 run homer to defeat the dreaded Friars

Then URI took 2 of 3 to start the A10 season playing @ George Mason.

So this LaSalle 3 game Series @ LaSalle is big

Like what Bridget Hurlman is doing with this team. Some good young players.
