Men's Soccer 2014 Season Thread
Men's Soccer 2014 Season Thread
After two games in the season, the Rams are without a win. In their first game the Rams outplayed Seton Hall, but could not put in the clincher and came away with a tie. Against PC in the second game, a bad 5-1 loss, we saw all the problems that have recently marked the program. Whereas URI has dominated the series against PC in the past, the Rams have now loss 4 straight to the Friars. So after promising start with the exhibition games, the regular season has begun badly.

Re: Men's Soccer in the early season
It was 1-0 in the second when one play, I won't say it changed everything since Pee-cee had the lead and was controlling a lot of possession, but it was effectively the end of Rhody's hopes.
Remember, the boys had gone 110 minutes 2 days earlier. Why does the NCAA have OT in regular season matches?!?
A Fry-ah attempted a shot, and missed the ball ala charlie brown, falling spectacularly in the process. I couldn't tell how much, if any, contact there was.
But out came the red card, and after the PK it was 2-0, and rhody was down a man.
Three more goals came in short succession.
Rhody got one back in the 88th.
After 2 games, I think the team has shown some good play. They look smarter, more confident on the ball when they have it in the middle third. This team will not finish 12th in the a-10!

Re: Men's Soccer in the early season
Why are we calling them "the boys" or is that UK football speak? I envision U12 South Kingstown soccer games when I hear that.
I hope you are right, Rudder, that they are fundamentally better despite the slow start.

At 4-3-1, they have already doubled their win total of last season (2-14) and equaled their win total of 2012 (4-11-3). This has been done at the 7 game mark of an 18 game season. Looks like things are headed in the right direction. Keep up the good play.

Re: Men's Soccer in the early season
It's nice to see the men's soccer team turning around. This is Gareth Elliott's second season as head coach. He played under Ed Bradley from 1998-2001, was an assistant for Bradley from 2003-05, and stayed at URI for two years after Bradley left. He was also able to convince Bradley to come back to URI as soccer Director of Operations before last season.

Re: Men's Soccer in the early season
It's now late season, only one home game left.
Friday nite v UMass.
So far, maximum points.
Good win today vs a good Dayton team.
Even match, not a lot of chances for either side.
Scoreless after 90, the good guys slipped a loose ball
in after a free kick, and walk away unbeaten and untied
in conference play after a great weekend.
Told ya we weren't finishing last, or 12th or whatever
the preseason pick was!

Re: Men's Soccer in the early season
With the Sunday OT 1-0 win over Dayton, the Rhody men move to 8-3-3 on the season and 4-0 in A-10 play. With only four games left, they are assured of a winning regular season (not counting A-10 Tournament). The last overall winning season (including tournament) was all the way back in 2007. Big improvement over the 2013 team which lost its last eight and went 2-14.

Is there a NCCA tournament for soccer and if there is are we in position to get into it? Do we need to win the conference to get in? When was our last A10 regular season title?

Re: Men's Soccer in the early season
TP,
In answers to your question, there is an NCAA soccer tournament. 48 teams are invited. 16 teams get first round byes. Every game but semi-finals and finals usually played on higher seeds home field.
In regards to URI, at this point they likely need to win the A10 to make the NCAA. Dayton (previously ranked 38) and George Mason (previously ranked 48) were both good wins, but URI entered the week ranked 116. They also have not performed strong on the road (1-2-1) which is partly why their RPI Is lower.
The A-10 is a decent soccer league, some really good teams (St. Louis and Davidson), and some really bad teams, 3 teams among the bottom 25 in D1 (St. Bonaventure, UMASS, LaSalle).
URI's final home game is against UMASS, but they will have some tough road games coming up where they can try to make a significant jump.
At St. Joes (previously 117)
At St. Louis (previously 18)
At Duquense (previously 80)
If they want to push at-large territory before conference tournament, I would estimate they could do no worse than 3-0-1 in those 4 games. I would say 3-0-1 rough estimate an RPI of 55-60. But there is room for them to move, I'm estimating a 20-30 spot jump for the Rams after last week.
And to question 3, a quick search tells me the last regular season title was '05, and the last conference tournament title was '06.

As someone else mentioned, there is a tournament for soccer, and we've been 11 times. We went in 1972, 76, 77, 79, 95, 96, 99, 2000, 03, 05, and 06. We played home games in the tournament in 72, 77, 79, 95, and 2000.TruePoint wrote:Is there a NCCA tournament for soccer and if there is are we in position to get into it? Re: Men's Soccer in the early season
Looking at our players in relation to the A10, we have 5 players that make various leaderboards, English senior Matt Sykes, English junior Ryan Oakley, South African redshirt freshman Dante Lamb, South African freshman Carlo Davids, and German freshman Nils Leifhelm. When it comes to the points stat, goals equal 2 points and assists equal 1 point.
Sykes is first in the league in shots and shots per game. He's 4th in points and goals and 6th in points per game and goals per game. He's tied for 5th in assists and 7th in assists per game.
Oakley is 9th in shots per game and 5th in assists and assists per game.
Lamb is 10th in points per game. He won the A10 rookie of the week for 10/6-12.
Davids is 8th in assists.
Leifhelm is our keeper. He's 8th out of 10 in goals against average, 5th out of 10 in save percentage and shutouts per game, 2nd of 10 in saves, 6th of 11 in saves per game and 4th of 11 in shutouts. He won back to back rookie of the week awards for 9/22-28 and 9/29-10/5

It was Joachim Löw checking out our rookie goalkeeper to take over for Manuel Neuer on the German National Team. At least that's what my cousin's fiancee who had a personal conversation with him outside the CVS in Wakefeild said. She also said Löw was at CVS because he needed some cough medicine. They had a nice conversation and then they took a selfie together. Enjoy the last two games with our rookie keeper, because Löw said "avter zees year he'z going zu Bayern Muenchen".

Another week, another rookie of the week honor, the fifth consecutive week URI has claimed the award. Dante Lamb gets his second award of the year for his performance Friday night where he scored two goals in 55 minutes of action against UMass, including the game winner. Lamb is leading URI with 9 points in conference play. He has four goals and one assist in 6 games.
