Men's Soccer 2014 Season Thread
Re: Men's Soccer 2014 Season Thread
Even though it is off-topic I appreciate the info on the MLS scheduling. The international window is really cool - makes total sense, I had just never thought of it before.
Go Rhody! Let's hope to go 2-0 on the day.

Thanks! If you're right then it seems like we really do need to play our way in the old fashioned way.rjsuperfly66 wrote:Don't believe it exists, largely to do with lack of interest.Puck Frovidence wrote:Nice! This combined with the win should give us a little bump. Does anyone know if there's a site for college soccer that will do up-to-the-minute RPI rankings?
RPI is probably between 55-60 unofficially speaking.
Beating GM would probably put them between 40-45.

The 2 best teams make the final.
Maybe Fordham pulls the upset? Nah. Would be nice if they did, though.

Re: Men's Soccer 2014 Season Thread
looks like URI will be playing Fordham on Sunday afternoon, Fordham up 2-0 with 15 minutes to go on SLU.
URI beat Fordham 1-0 in their first A10 game of the season

SLU will most likely get an at large NCAA berth, so URI has to beat Fordham to get in.

For the soccer experts, if we win, do we get a home game in the tournament?

we could, it would depend on the seed obviously. I don't know exactly where we stand to know what seed we'll getneil wrote:For the soccer experts, if we win, do we get a home game in the tournament?

Re: Men's Soccer 2014 Season Thread
If I had to estimate I would say URI is definitely in the running for a home game, which would mean being one of the Top 32. If you believe my estimate from yesterday to be correct, they are somewhere between 40-45, but I admit to that being conservative and they could be higher. The thing about Fordham is that I'm not sure how much that win will stand to affect their RPI. If I had to guess, Fordham enters the game ~100 and beating them probably pushes URI to somewhere between 30-35. Fordham could get higher though, as their wins vs. VCU and SLU will most certainly bump them significantly.
The one flaw with college soccer (like hockey and other non-revenue sports) is that it's reliant on the RPI as much as it is. The fact that a team has to battle it's way to a home NCAA game winning it's regular season and potentially it's postseason tournament is crazy to me. The A10 isn't the B10 or ACC when it comes to soccer, but it's still a good conference and should put 4 teams (and possibly 5) into the 48 team field.

URI ended the season with an RPI of 51. Going quickly through the bracket, it looks like the team with the best RPI left out was George Mason at 33.

Stronger OOC will help next year. Any word on who we'll be playing? I suspect we can draw some stronger opponents now, but don't know how many years out the schedules are made.
Also, is there any place to find info about the new recruiting class? Looks like Sykes will take nearly a quarter of this years scoring with him when he graduates in spring.

They were also unfairly punished for the Fordham match. If URI loses to SLU in the finals, probably in.

Re: Men's Soccer 2014 Season Thread
Fordham, a team that entered the A-10 Tournament with a record below .500, winning the auto bid did not help the perception of the league. This probably hurt GMU's at large chances. URI's route to the NCAA was only via the autobid given its poor RPI.

Can't believe they were snubbed. It was a travesty that they didn't make it into the tournament.

Re: Men's Soccer 2014 Season Thread
the A10 is not looked at as a good soccer league, like others have said they need a better OOC or at least beat the good teams they play (PC, BC)
