HOCKEY: Former Ram tapped as backup goalie for Prov Bruins

Unread post by Puck Frovidence »

Former URI goaltender Paul Kenny '13 was put on the roster Friday for the Providence Bruins road game at the Hartford Wolf Pack. This is the first time a former URI player has worn a sweater for an AHL team. Players from ACHA (national college club league) teams making their way onto professional rosters isn't new, but it's certainly a rarity and usually reserved for elite teams in Division I (Penn State, Iowa State, etc). Even within the ranks of ACHA-turned pro players Kenny is a rarity; few of even those players make it to the AHL, the second highest level of professional hockey in the United States and Canada (after the NHL).

Since graduating last year with a degree in Kinesiology, Kenny has worked at the NorthEast Sports Training & Rehabilitation
Center in Warwick with youth hockey programs. He also assists in the Providence Bruins organization with off-ice strength & conditioning. He dressed Friday as the backup goalie for Niklas Svedberg, replacing Malcolm Subban for the night. He did not see ice time during the game, where Providence beat Hartford 6-4.

While at URI, Kenny played on back-to-back conference championship teams, which made the national tournament twice. While he did not play on Friday, his inclusion on the roster is a big distinction and a nice feather in the cap for URI hockey.
