Ram Football Shutout at Richmond, 39-0

Unread post by ATPTourFan »

Rhody Football's nightmare season continued this weekend with an embarrassing shutout loss to the Richmond Spiders, 39-0. Rhody is now winless in 9 games, 7 of those losses within the CAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Rhode Island (0-9, 0-6 CAA Football) committed five turnovers and was shut out for the first time since the 2010 season opener in a 39-0 loss at Richmond Saturday.

After the teams battled through a scoreless first quarter, Richmond (6-3, 4-2 CAA Football) scored 13 points in the second quarter and 23 more in the third quarter to break the game open. Running back Kendall Gaskins rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Michael Strauss completed 17-of-25 attempts for 199 yards and two touchdowns for the Spiders. It was the seventh time this season Richmond has scored at least 35 points.

The Rams have now dropped 11 straight games overall, dating back to last season. The school record for consecutive losses is 12, set from 2009-10.

Piece by our very own SmartyBarrett on his new Rhody Rampage site:

Will Rhody Football Win a Game This Season?

It’s no fun for us to ask this question, but it’s time to be realistic about this team and this season. Does URI have a chance to win one of their last two games and avoid an 0-11 finish? First, let’s take a look at the state of the team after nine games. Besides being 0-9 (and 0-6 in the CAA), they’ve been outscored 336-89, or a game average of 37-10. Think about that for a second. They are losing games by an average of FOUR TOUCHDOWNS. It gets worse: Rhody has scored more than 10 points only twice in nine games, and allowed 30+ points eight times. Their opponent has scored more than double what the Rams have in every game but one, a 47-24 loss to Delaware. After their 39-0 loss to Richmond on Saturday, Rhody has now lost 11 straight games dating back to last season, and the shutout loss was their first since 2010. The only team close to URI in the standings is Georgia State (1-9, 1-6), who trounced Rhody 41-7 back on October 13th. The win was Georgia State’s first (and only to date) win in the FBS.

What Smarty's article doesnt mention is that due to URI's indecisiveness in regards to moving to the NEC now staying in the CAA, they are down 20 scholarships, recruited kids(a high number of RI kids) that have no business playing on a CAA team nor can compete in the CAA, many of the recruits were only offered half scholarships/partials which isnt a way to compete, then add in that one of your two best LB's gets hurt and is shut down and another is academically ineligible. This is a receipe for disaster and means a VERY LONG season. Plus you have a head coach who controls both offense and defense. He has highly qualified OC/DC that he should let call the plays and should realize his way isnt working with the talent he has. Hopefully Coach Trainor can right the ship as much as Rhody football can be righted with no real support from the school. A lot of talk by Bjorn but not much action by the Admin to right this ship.

It is a shame the administration let this happen. I know the school is going thru hard times and reduced support, but so does UNH and Maine.
Trainor had the program heading in the right direction two years ago, then zap, the admin lowers the boom.

If the NEC thing never happened and they were on pace for their usual 3-5 win season, would the prognosis be any different? Three winning seasons in the last 26 years, any reasonable person in a decision-making position would question whether it is possible for this program to compete at this level given the facilities. URI Admin. doesn't have the power to build a stadium even if it wanted to.

I disagree, would be closer to 5-6 or 6-5.

1. When can they reasonably expect to be in a competitive game again?
This week? Next week? Next year in week one? Next year at all? 2014?
I'm not talking about them being a competitive team,
I'm just asking when they won't lose a game by 50 points.

2. When can they reasonably expect to have a chance to win a game? This decade?

3. When can they reasonably expect to have a chance to go .500 in the league? This century?

Sorry to be so pessimistic, but I want .500 in the league.

And .500 ain't walking through that door any time soon.

If Trainor can't say we can be competitive next year and be at .500 by 2014,
they need to let him go, too. No matter whose fault this mess is now.
Cause this sucks!

They won't be competitive this year. That's pretty clear. The depressing thing is that things are probably going to get worse next year. The 12 freshmen class was largely undersized and not really CAA level quality (you can blame that directly on the confusion over the moving out of the CAA at the time). The senior turnover this year with BJF, Billy Morgan, Kyle Elliott, and Joe Migliarese and Doug Johnson (I doubt that he gets an injury redshirt) among those running out of edibility isn't going to help either. It's not going to be any easier this year to recruit top talent to a team that didn't win a game in 2012 and just got pounded all year is going to be an issue too... I won't be surprised to see that administration stick with Trainer for another year with the expectation that there's nothing they can do about how much things are going to suck next year. In the mean time, however, the only real answer is to bite the bullet and put some money into the facilities. I've been too way to many d3, d2, facilities that are far superior to those of URI. Guys want to play at the higher level of competition that URI & the CAA offer but things like a decent weight room, stadium, practice field, etc also play a big role in recruiting decisions. I doubt that serious money ever gets spent on that so the cycle of losing and mediocrity will probably just continue in the future until the university is forced to shut the team down because the press box collapses and demolishes the prehistoric restrooms...
