HOCKEY: Towson Terribles

Unread post by Puck Frovidence »

Nice showing tonight from the boys in Keaney Blue as they topped the Towson Tigers at the Boss 2-1. Very strange energy in the rink tonight, as two Towson players ended up carted off with head injuries in the second period, one with some serious red fluid left on the ice. I'm not trying to be too flip, the kids name is Ryan Buccigrossi and he ended up ok, got carted to South County Hospital during the game and reportedly received 18 stitches. He won't be back this weekend, as word is he went unconscious on the ice and likely has a head injury; there was enough blood on the ice that the linesmen had to come in and scape/shovel it away. Rams received no penalty on that play (from being there, it was definitely a clean hit), but a few minutes later, Dillon Balsamo took a game misconduct and Rhody spent the next 5 minutes down a man (again, probably uncalled for in terms of the hit... it was clean, but people were hurt and tempers were high....)

Nonetheless, Rams pulled out the W, and to be honest it was all Rhody all night. They won nearly all their battles for the puck and maintained possession an overwhelming amount of the time. This team is known for being hard working and it was certainly in display tonight, they battled constantly and made Los Tigres fight for every inch of ice they got (which wasn't many). The score makes it look close, but Towson was out muscled, out worked, and out performed every step of the way. The only thing that kept the Tigers in the game at all was their phenomenal goalie Steven Kelly. Kelly put on an absolute clinic tonight, stopping 50 of 52 URI shots with some impressive saves that included a smothering dive to kill the puck nearly 30 feet out of his crease. His talent and heart made for quite a spectacle and with a better team in front of him, Kelly is a championship caliber goalie for sure.

Tomorrow promises to be much lighter fare. With the two guys hurt tonight, the vibe got weird... the 50 or so Towson fans were angry, and the 500 or so URI fans were reticent to get too rowdy in light of the severity of the injuries. The game was still rollicking by the end, and hopefully that energy carries over to tomorrow's game at 4PM. Highly recommend area fans check it out in person for a paltry 5 bucks a ticket, or long distance fans follow along for free with WRIU on 90.3 FM in RI or online at wriu.org (if you're willing to drop a little cash you can get video feed synced to the radio coverage for about 8 bucks at fasthockey.com).
