URI FOOTBALL REACHES 1,000 GAMES
NEXT: Saturday at Brown, 6 p.m.
SOME GLORY DAYS ALONG THE WAY

There have been times when Ram football was something to see, including these memorable games in the program’s history

By MIKE SZOSTAK JOURNAL SPORTS WRITER
One thousand football games, from grassy plains in Kingston to the frozen tundra in Bozeman, Mont.; from Yankee Conference outposts in Orono, Durham, Amherst and Storrs to a U.S. Armed Forces outpost in Frankfurt, Germany; from the Carrier Dome in Syracuse to the The Arena in Milano.
More than a century of touchdowns and turnovers, road trips and homecomings, wins (387), losses (568) and ties (44).
The University of Rhode Island will kick off its 1,000th game Saturday night in the annual Governor’s Cup clash against Brown at Brown Stadium, the 98th meeting of the Rams and the Bears.

That's really well-done. Some fantastic moments. Hopefully we'll be competing for championships again soon.

I think the URI at Maine 1st overtime game had a big write up in Sports Illustrated, maybe someone can confirm that.

Does SI have an online archive feature where we could possibly look that up?

From SI
"That was a classic," wheezed Rhode Island Coach Bob Griffin while sprawled on the grass outside the URI dressing room after the Rams had won a 58-55, six-overtime game with Maine that took three hours, 46 minutes and is believed to be the longest game in modern collegiate history. "I just decided it was time to have a winner and a loser." Trailing 55-52, Griffin passed up the chance to kick another tying field goal and called Wide Receiver T.J. DelSanto's number on an end-around with fourth-and-goal at the two. DelSanto scored his fourth touchdown of the game, so ending 51 minutes of matching touchdowns and field goals under the Yankee Conference's NCAA-approved tie-breaker system. The score at the end of regulation was 21-21; nine touchdowns and three field goals later, Rhode Island had its victory.

was at the '84 game against BU that attracted 13,000 people and the 85 game against UConn, which was the most unbelievable comeback I've ever seen.

was at both of those games too Iggy. That BU team had a great RB who's name escapes me. Those Erhardt teams were great to watch, that Akron playoff game was like no other atmosphere I ever saw at URI for a football.

That was a fun trip. Went to a Serie A match at the san siro stadium that hosted the opening game of the 1990 world cup.
We went to Venice for a day. I don't remember much of the football, but I remember standing in the middle of the street
singing "Rhode Island Born" at the top of my lungs. My first trip to Europe.
