FOOTBALL: Rhode Island vs. Fordham 8/29/13
Rhody football kicks off the season against Fordham tomorrow night in the Bronx. The last time they played each other was in 2011 and Rhody won that game 21-17. Start of a new season for the Rams! I was hoping to get everyones thoughts on the game!

I would love to see our guys be competitive and show that they are intent on turning this program around.....a win would be nice, but, I will be happy with competitiveness....

They'll grab a couple of wins this year, but I don't think they bring one home tomorrow night. Hope I am wrong though.

Alot of our offense is new, no real experience on receiving the ball. I have some serious doubts about us moving the ball, although I hope I'm wrong. Wins? I penciled in Central and Brown, and that might be a reach. Prove me wrong! Go Rams!

Yes, if they lose to the better team without GIVING the game away with countless turnovers and failed coverages, I will be OK with that.Ramulous wrote:I would love to see our guys be competitive and show that they are intent on turning this program around.....a win would be nice, but, I will be happy with competitiveness....
Goal for this season, win games you CAN win. When you lose, do not get embarrassed.

Good defensive series for Rhody midway thru the 2nd quarter. Fordham still leads 24-3.

Bob throws his second interception tonight, which is returned 61 yards for a TD. Fordham leads 31-12.

Re: Rhode Island vs. Fordham 9/29/13
Why didn't Peavey get more of a look as the starter?
Bentsen hardly lit it up last year. 7 TD's & 7 INT'S 155 YPG.
Not to put it all on Bentsen either, this team couldn't stop a nose bleed. Absolutely no depth.
Sorry for the perceived negativity but just callin' it as I see it. It doesn't get much worse than last year. Outscored on average 40-10, and not a win to show for it.
Looks like it's going to be another long year.

Hmmm. The RB's had the best stats I have seen in a while.
But,agree with STC,let's give Peavey a chance?

This thread was confusingly mis-titled (it said the game was Sept. 29th). I changed it, but I wish I saw that before. Hope everyone realized the game was tonight.

Re: Rhode Island vs. Fordham 8/29/13
As for the game, I watched the first half and the first few minutes of the third. It just seemed like the same story. Our defense struggles to stop the pass. We let up 4 TDs through the air. The defense needs work to say the least. They did have a few good stops late in the 2nd quarter and early in the 3rd, but they let up 51 points in the end.
The offense struggled. The pass game is inconsistent and they need to improve if they want to stay competitive. The running game did look okay though. Delgado and Sebastian ran the ball well. That could be a strength moving forward.
Also, did anyone catch why Wynn ended the game with minus 23 receiving yards? He looked really good in the first half.

Re: Rhode Island vs. Fordham 8/29/13
ESPN.com's stats were way off (I assume that's where you saw this because I saw the same thing). He actually had positive 23 yards. ESPN also had some funky rushing numbers and a few other discrepancies - GoRhody.com has the real numbers.rhodyfan3 wrote:Also, did anyone catch why Wynn ended the game with minus 23 receiving yards? Re: Rhode Island vs. Fordham 8/29/13
You'd think with the running game opening things up he could have stretched the field a little more. His two INTs were both pretty ugly, too. I like him on the QB sneaks, draws, options, etc. but his passing leaves a bit to be desired.Rhodymob05 wrote:Not a fan of Bentsen

Re: Rhode Island vs. Fordham 8/29/13
Going to be another long year. There are a few bright spots, but they are going to get steamrolled by the better teams on their schedule. The QB is limited, the defense horrible.
IMO this program has another year or two, at most, after this year to produce a competitive team in the CAA. If not, sayonara.
Maybe 2 wins this year.

It's one thing to lose CAA games but to get smoked by Fordham? There's no reason why Fordham should be way better and can recruit better players.
Joe's a nice guy, and Thorr likes him a lot, but he's done.

Re: Rhode Island vs. Fordham 8/29/13
I would give Bentsen the start next weekend. I wouldn't pull him just yet after this one game, unless the kid Peavey is really showing up at practice. Does anyone know how he has been doing? I watched his HS film, looks like he has a pretty good arm and seems pretty accurate too. I put it up on his thread in case anyone hasn't seen it yet.

Yeah, if Trainer doesn't make adjustments at key positions next week then he could just be digging a hole he'll never escape.

Isn't Trainer in the last year of his contract? I know he was dealt a bad hand with the conference switching fiasco, but unless there is significant improvement this year, I don't see how he stays.

I can't understand the defense, and imagine if a coach goes "offah" two seasons in a row? Despicable program. Put peavey in, can't get worse than this.

Fordham has better Facilities, but more importantly is serious about finding recruits nationally.

Re: Rhode Island vs. Fordham 8/29/13
ME TOO, especially the punter. They just landed an FBS transfer at punter and he didn't see the field until the final punt. No clue why he wasn't out there - I was assuming he was hurt until he came out at the very end. It was a halfway decent punt, which is more than I can say for McHugh.Hal Kopp wrote:I am amazed they stayed with the QB and punter ??

On a general note, how do coaches recruit in the last year of a contract? It's especially troublesome when your team is this terrible. I'm surprised Trainer wasn't fired at the end of last year.

Re: Rhode Island vs. Fordham 8/29/13
How much longer can the Administration and the Athletic Department justify
the huge expense of football, given these results?
To put the Ryan Center abutting the high school stadium, so the swells can
look at the game indoors, they sacrificed thousands of seats,
which they may soon regret.
The time is coming soon, to stop the "But what about Homecoming?"
and become realistic about dumping more good money after bad.

I read somewhere recently that only 23 schools operate their athletics depts in the black....and I doubt any of them are Division 1-AA football.....

Tell me what sport at URI makes money? If you say basketball then you are not fully calculating the cost of basketball, which must include facilities over the years, Rodman, Keaney, and the Ryan Center. Unless you are in a conference with big TV money(even the new Big East), you are not making money in any sport.

Re: Rhode Island vs. Fordham 8/29/13
We might lose less $ without football......I am not advocating dropping football however, we might still be in search of the right coach.
The sport will never be in the black, but it wouldn't be the embarrassment it is now....I don't think trainer is the answer.
We think Hurley is the right guy for men's hoops.
We are unsure on Inglese for women's hoops.
I am pessimistic about trainer
