Re: UMass Football first FBS season

If NCSU and VT move to the SEC, then there will be room in the ACC for Uconn and Cinncy, it is only a matter of time. The question is what happens to the Umass and Temple, both play in Pro sports media markets? I remember Bill Reynolds saying how Uconn move to 1-A football was a big mistake, now it ...

Re: mercifully its over

BlueMoom, the impression that you give that basketball funds all other sports I do not think is true. I don't have the facts, but somewhere the cost of the Ryan Center has to be included in the cost for basketball, and nobody ever does that, or the fact that student fees are paying the bonds on the ...

Re: mercifully its over

Seems to me that a lot of people still don't get it. College sports is all about football, I know that is a hard pill to take for a basketball school like URI, or PC. Why is Louisville in the ACC, why is Boise State in the Big East for now, and maybe the Pac14 soon? Football. We had the second best ...

Re: mercifully its over

Good Post, plus I would add, you can't blame Joe Trainor for the football problems. He had the program going good 2-3 years ago. Great O-line and D-line until budget moves and the NEC decision. Thorr pays a lot of attention to details, that nobody ever sees. Plus Thorr had to fix over the East Stand...

Re: What is it going to take to win?

Frankly, I was surprised how well we did against some 1-A teams. Now I know the Army teams of today are not like in the past, but URI hung with Syracuse in 2011, Cincinnati in 2003. If we could get to the level of even Maine, we could play those games and put up a good fight. Just think we were tied...

Re: mercifully its over

How much have budget cuts hurt our AthleticPrograms. We cut men's swimming, womens Gymnastics, and field hockey. I think our budget at $7-10 million now was 75% to 100% larger a 7 years ago.
Does anyone have better data them me?
Can we attribute this to budget cuts?

Re: What is it going to take to win?

Wow, when people say kill football and put the money into basketball, well, that's what has been happening. Build the Ryan Ctr, destroy few of the football facilities you have, the field house, cut into the practice field, remove the West Stands for 5 years, have the football team dress in trailers,...

Re: Libery U. Football facilities

Who knows if there will be a State of Rhode Island, as we know it. URI maybe in better shape than the State of RI, since URI only gets 8% of its money from the state to the operation budget. People still think casinos are the answer to prosperity, until that changes their is not much hope for the st...

maybe URI could become the evangelist U. of New England and get funding from Jerry Falwell.

Re: Ram Football Shutout at Richmond, 39-0

It is a shame the administration let this happen. I know the school is going thru hard times and reduced support, but so does UNH and Maine.
Trainor had the program heading in the right direction two years ago, then zap, the admin lowers the boom.

Well, the attendance at football games per game average maybe higher than last years basketball average. Imagine if the football team had a consistent winning record.

Re: Proposed Meade Stadium Upgrade from a few years back

The 5th Quarter club raises lots of money for football. I would say that they may raise more money for football then for any other sport, if you don't count the donation for the new baseball field.

Re: Proposed Meade Stadium Upgrade from a few years back

We know what the problems are with football. We used to just blame the coach, but it is facilities, recruiting, hiring all the coaching staff you need, and administrative support, at least on a par with UNH and Maine.

You need a fall sport, and nothing better than Saturday Afternoon football and tailgating, but I would take a night game early in the year. I think hockey has head injury issues also.

Re: 0-6 GSU versus 0-5 URI today at Family Day

No, I did not say URI basketball should not be top priority, but when you spend $54 million on the Ryan Center and football can't get lights, there is an imbalance. I see where Bob Kraft is thinking about putting a $120 million stadium for the Revs in Fall River. Two bad Kingston does not have good ...

Re: Men's soccer v St. Joe Sunday

We lost men's swimming, gymnastics, womens field hockey. It does not look like those savings helped any other sport.
I would think the Athletic budget is the smallest it as been in 20 years, and adjusted for inflation , maybe 40+ years.

Don't forget how Jim Foster is doing a terrific job.
Does anyone know the baseball expenses, they do a lot of travel and are away a good portion of February and March? Maybe the players are paying their own way?

Re: 0-6 GSU versus 0-5 URI today at Family Day

This is what happens when you take a frail program, then say you are going to the NEC, drop 16 scholarships, lose coaches. This was totally avoidable, as Joe Trainer had the program going in the right direction 2-3 years ago. As far as increased revenue going from basketball to football, don't forge...

Re: Proposed Meade Stadium Upgrade from a few years back

I believe politics plays a big part in any football improvements, or for that matter any athletic facility improvements. URI is hated by Projo and the media, every move URI takes is scrutinized by the press even though URI only gets 7% of its budget from the state. URI even got bad press when they h...

Re: brown game

As long as we hang it there it may happend, but maybe just not right away. URI football is being underfunded, it is if basketball played in Rodman Hall and only had 9 players on the roster, that is where football is. Except for a few improvement by Mo Zarchen building the East Stands, not much has c...
